- ENCOUNTERING THE BLUR
You slowly proceed down a hill toward an amorphous, cloudlike mass looming above the lake beneath you (see Figure 4.1). At the end of a long, narrow bridge heading off across the lake in front of you and terminating in the middle of what you can now discern to be a huge clump of fog suspended over the water, you come to a “log-in station," where you are invited to fill out a brief survey consisting of twenty more or less personal questions. Upon turning this in, you are handed a heavy translucent raincoat that, you are told, has been programmed with your "profile." Excited and a bit flustered, you hastily don the raincoat as you walk onto the narrow bridge and toward the dense mass of fog looming in front of you.
