The state also plays a role as direct (minority) owner of platform firms. Chinese state entities have taken ‘golden shares’ in a number firms like Alibaba, Tencent, and ByteDance. Alibaba recently disclosed that state funds had purchased such stakes in over twelve of its business entities (Zheng, 2024).
