As if obeying the same program, you and your blurry interlocutor turn away at the same moment and, as your heart rate gradually slows, you attune yourself once again to the now decreasingly rapid and softer pinging noise, which, you realize in a flash, was also an index of your affinity to the other.\n\nMaking your way through the thicket of vertical LED columns looming at regular intervals out of the fog, you come to a stairway leading upwards and, as you ascend the stairs, you climb up out of the fog onto an observation deck (see Figure 4.3). There you are treated to breathtakingly clear views of land on one side and lake on the other. Reminiscent of an airplane's abrupt emergence from out of the clouds this ascent restores the predominant function of vision in your sensory ecology and in so doing brings some much needed relief from the intense sensory demands of the fog environment. Still, after some time relaxing on this “Angel Deck,\" you find yourself drawn back to the vaporous surround oozing just beneath you.\n\nAlmost immediately upon redescending into the fog, the sonar ping from your coat becomes quite furious in its rhythm and you see a bright red blotch of color in front of you; stopping in anticipation of another face-to-face encounter with another anonymous \"soulmate, you are altogether flabbergasted to find your entire body vibrating in response to what, you quickly discern, is a tactile reaction by your raincoat. Stunned by the intensity of this experience, you race back toward the exit. Stepping onto the exit ramp, you scurry to shore, shedding your raincoat and hurriedly taking a password that will allow you to access your experience from the comfort and safe distance of your home.\n\nBODIES IN CODE\n\n180","previous_page":179,"next_page":181}
