初版译后记

我们首先来交代一下有关译名的一些问题。

吉登斯在构建结构化理论的过程中，利用了大量全新的概念。这些概念有些借自其他学科，例如从结构主义语言学中借用的“组合关系”和“聚合关系”，从时间地理学中借用的“时空交汇”等；还有一些属于自创，如结构性特征、情节片断等。这些概念大多难以翻译成我们习见的那种简单双音节形式的传统社会学概念(如结构或整合)。所以，除了在文中注出概念原文之外，我们有必要在此简要说明一下一些比较复杂的概念的译法。

(1)意外后果的译法：

Unintendedconsequences（或outcomes)是结构化理论的一个关键概念，吉登斯力求通过这个概念，避免社会理论经常陷入的功能主义陷阱。最贴切的译法应为“意图之外的后果”，即这些后果并非行动者所意想的，和行动者的意图（intention）是相悖的。尤其值得注意的是，这种后果和预期并没有直接的关系。也就是说，从逻辑的角度来看，存在一些与行动者意图相悖的后果，但行动者却可能预料到了。同样探讨这个问题的布东(R.Boudon）常举的“挤兑”一例，就比较接近这种情况。每一个试图从银行取出存款的行动者，都恰恰是因为潜在地预期了银行的危机，才会采取挤兑的行动，但他们这种行动的后果却与其意图完全相悖，挤兑使个人的目标最终失败。吉登斯本人也明确提出应将二者区分开来，同时指出，默顿的潜功能理论的问题之一，就在于没有认识到这其中的细微差异。然而，对于一个吉登斯常用的概念来说，“意图之外的后果”作为译名未免累赘，为使行文简明，我们选用了一种有些不太精确的译法，即“意外后果”。之所以说有些不太精确，是因为在中文里，“意外”的“意”兼有“意料”和“意图”两种含义，所以容易引起误解，希望读者能注意到这一点。但我们认为，若是同时兼顾简明与贴切的话，这个译法是目前最不糟的选择，所可能引起的误解也是最少的。
